Quilt Prep:
For best results, your quilt top should be squared off, and free of loose threads, pins, and open seams. It should be clean and pressed, with seams pressed flat. If your edges are pieced (as opposed to borders), it is beneficial to make a stay stitch 1/8″ from the edge, all the way around the quilt, to prevent seams from coming open as the quilt fabric is wound on the longarm. Please indicate which edge is the “top” of the quilt.
The backing fabric must be a minimum of 5” larger on each side of your quilt top, to be able to secure your quilt squarely on the longarm quilting machine. For example, if your quilt top measures 60”x60”, your backing fabric must be a minimum of 70″x70″.
If you have a pieced back, ideally, the seam allowance should be 1/2 inch, (which is wider than the 1/4 inch normal seam allowance). Selvages in the seam allowance should be trimmed off. The selvage weave is tighter than the rest of the fabric, and will result in puckering.
Can you quilt my wavy borders?
Wavy borders are difficult to “quilt out” and can result in tucks and pleats on your quilt top. They most often occur when attaching a length of border to the quilt top, and then trimming off the excess. The best way to ensure a flat border is to measure the quilt top in three places across the width and average that span. Cut two borders to that length and pin to the quilt top at each end and in the centre. Work the remainder of border fabric in, easing the border strip or the quilt top to make it fit. Do the same measuring to the length of the quilt in three places and repeat the process for the other two sides.
What is your turnaround time?
We are currently completing quilt tops in approximately 2 weeks from arrival in the shop.
Can I send my own batting?
We offer batting through our shop, which saves you shipping costs in weight and size. We sell by the inch, so you only pay for what we need. We use Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 batting. If you have a batting you prefer and wish us to use, please send it with your top.
Ready to Ship your Quilt?
Click here for the intake form, print and complete the order information. Once you have determined your size, thread colour, pattern and other noted information, package your quilt for shipping to Olive Crow Quiltery. Ensure you have your quilt top, backing fabric (and batting if you are sending your own) folded neatly in a plastic bag within your shipping box, in case it becomes wet in transit. Please include a copy of your order form. Once we receive your quilt, we will confirm via email, invoice for payment and advise an estimated completion date. Your return shipping fee is the cost for us to ship back your completed quilt. You will pay the first $10 of return shipping, and Olive Crow Quiltery will cover the rest.
